THE NEW YEAR’S EVE SKY SPECTACULAR RETURNS TO SACRAMENTO
Annual family-friendly event is one of many exciting ways to usher in 2017
Sacramento, Calif. – Sponsored by the City of Sacramento and produced by Visit Sacramento, residents are invited to the biggest, admission-free New Year’s party as the 2017 Sky Spectacular returns to Old Sacramento’s waterfront. This year’s event will cater to residents of all ages, with live music, food and drinks, games and an awe-inspiring fireworks show.
“2016 has been such an incredible year of growth for Sacramento, so it’s fitting that we celebrate all that we’ve accomplished with the largest fireworks program that we’ve ever produced on New Year’s Eve,” said Visit Sacramento President & CEO Steve Hammond. “This year’s event will be very representative of our city – the perfect blend of time-honored tradition and new excitement and attractions.”
While Old Sacramento will continue to be programmed late into the evening with an outdoor live band and specials at restaurants and bars throughout the district, Visit Sacramento has centered this year’s Sky Spectacular around one fireworks show at 9 p.m. (instead of two, as in previous years).
“The goal is to capitalize on the event’s historical peak draw times and to encourage residents to get out and explore all that the city offers on Dec. 31,” said Mike Testa, COO of Visit Sacramento. “When we started the event in 2001, there weren’t other big draw New Year’s Eve events happening in Sacramento, and now our city is filled with new energy and a host of events and venues to enjoy. We see a great opportunity to showcase the growth of this market and the diversity of experiences available in this community.”
While the schedule for this year’s event is new, the budget, staffing and planning involved to produce the event have remained the same. What used to be a 13-minute display at 9:00 p.m. and a 7-minute show at midnight, will now be the longest fireworks display in Sacramento at over 20 minutes (in the 9 p.m. hour). And, to cater to the family-friendly time frame of the earlier sky concert, more kid-centric entertainment will fill the streets of Old Sacramento from 5:00-9:00 p.m. From unique live music to strolling superheroes, this party has been designed to delight the community.
With so much excitement in Sacramento on Dec. 31, Visit Sacramento is encouraging revelers to have a plan for their transportation. The City of Sacramento’s Tower Bridge garage (at Front and Capitol Mall) and the Old Sacramento garage at 2nd and I are good options for those heading down to the New Year’s Eve Sky Spectacular. Taking light rail to downtown Sacramento is another great option! Sacramento RT will operate regular light rail service on the Blue Line and Gold Line with extended service back to Folsom after the show.
